You got a new job and your first day is in a couple of weeks. What do you need to do before your first day? Should you buy a new wardrobe, get a haircut, and wash your car? Read on to see our suggestions.

As Michigan is preparing to return to work, you may be switching employers or changing fields. We know a change like that can be nerve-wracking, so we’re here to help you with a simple list that can inform your decisions leading up to the big day. Check out the list below for U.P. Michigan Works’ helpful tips.

Wash and, If Necessary, Iron Your Work Clothes

  • Start your first day with clean, appropriate clothes. If you’re going to work in a dirty job, wash your clothes anyways to ensure you get rid of any unwanted smells.

Practice Your Commute

  • Take a drive to your new job before your first day and time your commute. That way, you’ll know when you need to leave your home. No one wants to be late on their first day. (P.S. Early is on time and on time is late)

Research the Organization

  • You’ve already done some research while preparing for your interview, but do more. Check out the organization’s website to learn about what you will be walking into on day one.

Do Your Homework

  • Human Resources has likely given you paperwork to fill out and tasks to complete before your first day. Fill out the paperwork and complete the tasks as you are able to show off your reliability and interest in the job.

Take Deep Breaths

  • Social anxiety is real. You might be sweating at the thought of starting from scratch and making new friends at work, but we’re here to tell you that it’ll all be okay. Take 5 deep breaths and remind yourself that they picked you for a reason.
