Single Dad Overcomes Barriers to Provide for his Son – A Success Story

Darelle poses in front of a Midwest Truck Driving Sign with his certificate.

Darelle, a single father, was permanently laid off from his employer in February 2019.  After months of searching for work, he was not able to obtain suitable employment.  His struggles led him to U.P. Michigan Works (UPMW).

Since Darelle met the criteria for programmatic assistance, he was enrolled in the WIOA Dislocated Worker program. He attended Class A CDL training at Midwest Truck Driving School with the help of UPMW staff and training funds through WIOA. After successfully completing his Class A CDL training in July, he started searching for a job. With job search assistance from his Michigan Works Case Manager, he obtained a position with Aspulndh Tree Experts, LLC working 40 hours per week at a livable wage.

During a follow-up with him in October 2020, Darelle reported that he was making an additional 3 dollars per hour more than he started at! Through thoughtful and comprehensive help from UPMW, Darelle is now able to provide for his son and is ready to win.
