Ed the Veteran – A Success Story

Ed stands in front of the camera in an American Job Center in the Upper Peninsula wearing jeans and a winter jacket.

Ed originally came into Michigan Works! to sign up for Unemployment benefits and Register for Work.  He had been permanently laid off from the Schoolcraft Co. Medical Care Facility due to budget cuts. While Ed was in the office, a Michigan Works! staff member asked him if he had ever served in the military. He indicated that he is a veteran, so the staff member explained to him what our services are, and they had him fill out a military questionnaire form.

After reviewing the form, the staff member knew that he was qualified to be referred for veteran’s services.  The staff member referred him to the Veteran’s Career Advisor due to a significant barrier to employment as indicated by the military questionnaire form.

Later, Ed came back into the American Job Center for a job workshop. During the workshop, the staff member helped Ed update his resume and found out what his career qualifications were. A local engineering company had been looking for someone with his qualifications for quite some time, so the staff member promptly emailed his resume to the CEO of the company. That day, the company called him for an interview.

Ed went in for his interview and was hired on the spot.  He came back to the American Job Center to thank us immediately after he was hired.  During his visit, he voiced how much he appreciated the assistance Michigan Works! offered him.
