Yoopers are Getting Hired through Application Drives

A man sits at a table and fills out an application at an application drive.

Read on to learn more about the application drives that Upper Peninsula Michigan Works! has and will hold throughout the U.P.

You may have seen our roving RV around the Upper Peninsula more than usual lately. No, we aren’t taking an extended summer vacation. It’s been acting as our rolling billboard at our recent application drives. What’s an application drive, you ask? Sit back, relax, and let us explain.

What is an application drive?

Application drives, at their base level, are events where job seekers looking for employment in the Upper Peninsula can easily apply to multiple jobs with various employers. The difference between application drives and normal job fairs is that a single application is filled out by the job seeker. Normally, an individual would have to fill out one application per employer, but that’s not the case here. Although we wouldn’t advise doing this, someone could apply to 50 different employers in the same amount of time that it would take them to apply to 1 at a normal job fair.

What do employers get out of it?

Upper Peninsula businesses are always looking for talent. Marketing their opportunities isn’t always easy, though, especially when communities in the U.P. are so rural and spread out. Application drives make it easy for U.P. employers to advertise their opportunities. Everyone who attends the event will receive a complete listing of jobs that are currently available with all of the participating employers. Job seekers might find a job or a local employer that they hadn’t even heard of or considered before the hiring event.

How have the events gone so far?

The Baraga County Application Drive on September 30th is our 10th application drive since we began hosting them in June of 2021. So far, communities like Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette, Munising, St. Ignace, and more have all been host to one of these events. At the Sault Ste. Marie event, over 50 job seekers submitted an application. At the Marquette and Manistique applications drives, 32 and 21 applications were submitted, respectively. As we hold more application drives, more employers and job seekers will take notice. Don’t miss out on a life-changing opportunity by not attending!

How do I prepare for an application drive?

There isn’t much to it. Since you more than likely aren’t going to be meeting with an employer face-to-face, there’s no need to put on a suit or a nice dress. We do ask, however, that you look presentable and are ready to take a serious, professional step towards a new career. Having a current resume and a list of your past jobs doesn’t hurt, either.

Where can I find more information?
