Helping People Train to Win.
Develop an Apprenticeship
- Helps recruit and develop a highly skilled workforce
- Improves productivity and the bottom line
- Reduces turnover costs and increases employee retention
- Customizable training plans
- Foster a diverse and inclusive culture
- Keep young talent in the UP
- Veteran employees pass down knowledge, advice, and tricks of the trade that might otherwise take a non-apprenticed employee years to learn on their own.
- An apprenticeship is a several year commitment between employer and employee.
- Apprenticeships require both components of on-the-job training as well as 144 hours (about 6 days) of classroom training per year of the apprenticeship.
- The completion of a Department of Labor registered apprenticeship allows your workers to gain a transferable industry recognized credential known as a journey workers certificate.
- Apprenticeships require at least one wage increase from start to finish.
- The ratio of apprentice to supervisor or journey worker must be at least 1:1.
- Employers can either sponsor themselves, or work with UPMW as a sponsor.
- Employers who want to sponsor themselves can begin by viewing https://www.apprenticeship.gov/employers/registered-apprenticeship-program/build/create
- Employers who are curious about the services UPMW offers, can contact us at apprentice@upmichiganworks.org to set up an appointment, or reach out to their local UPMW Business Service Specialist.
- Apprenticeships require time to develop (up to 1 year in certain cases) and require intense work with the DOL to get registered, as well as all reporting.
- UPMW acts as a sponsor of RA. This means that we help employers develop a strong training plan, do all communication with the DOL on the companies’ behalf, do all mandatory state and federal reporting, as well as handle all DOL audits and file retention. We also have access to a new app called Work Hands that allows for easy reporting of timecards and competency evaluations so both employers and apprentices can track the apprentices progress throught the program. We also may be able to offer incentive payments depending on grant based funding sources available.
- If an employer works with us on an occupation that we have already gotten approved, generally the process goes by much quicker than starting from scratch. Our current DOL approved occupations include: Early Childhood Education, Computer System Analysts, CNC Machinists, Certified Medical Assistants, and Sourcing Recruiters.
- Employers can learn more about the specifics of RA at https://www.apprenticeship.gov/employers/explore-apprenticeship
- OR they can reach out to UPMW at apprentice@upmichiganworks.org
