Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA)

Trade Adjustment Assistance

What is TAA?

The Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program is for workers who were partially or totally separated from their employer due to the results of foreign trades and had those lay offs certified by the USDOL.

If you worked at one of these companies, you may qualify for benefits:

  • Cliffs Natural Resources (6/14/2014-9/17/2017)
  • White Pine Electric Power (9/10/2015-9/5/2019)
  • Eagle Mine (9/17/2018-2/18/2022)
  • Superior Extrusion (5/8/2011-5/30/2014)
  • Escanaba Paper Company (2/23/2012-5/9/2015)
  • Smurfit-Stone Container (12/28/2008-5/5/2012)
  • White Pine Copper Refinery (8/6/2009-12/6/2012)
  • Ironwood Plastics (8/3/2008-4/4/2012)
  • CCI Systems (2/14/2010-4/20/2013)

What if I was laid off years ago?

One of TAA’s benefits is a lifetime consideration for a training service to upskill into a new career that will result in meeting or exceeding previous wages.

Would I know that I was eligible for this benefit?

During your initial layoff, a Michigan Works! Office would have made efforts to notify you of benefits and invited you to attend a Worker Benefit Orientation. You may still be eligible for services, regardless of if you attended a Worker Benefit Orientation at the time of your layoff.

What can I do now?

Contact Jen at Upper Peninsula Michigan Works! and we will assist you in determining eligibility for TAA services.
