Making Moves Toward a Future Career
Annika, a student at Marquette Alternative high school, was planning to attend Northern Michigan University’s Cosmetology program with the goal of one day owning her own salon. UP Michigan Works! met Annika while visiting students for the Jobs for Michigan’s Graduates program.
Annika shared her career goals with the Talent Specialist and connections were made. The Talent and Business Services Specialists worked together to implement a work-based learning opportunity in the area. Annika was brought into UP Hair Company to get hands on experience working in a salon.
She was exposed to the behind-the-scenes operations, worked alongside staff, provided administrative support, and trained one-on-one with the owner of the salon. These experiences provided Annika with a deep understanding of daily operations and the responsibilities of owning a salon beyond cutting and styling hair.
Annika completed her work-based learning on August 25th, 2023. Following her experience, Annika expressed that she is even more excited to attend Cosmetology School! The hands-on experience of working in a salon will be valuable as she transitions into the classroom.
The owner of UP Hair Company, was thrilled to have Annika as a member of the team! She expressed interest in working with UP Michigan Works! to bring even more students in for work-based learning opportunities in the future.
