Working and Thriving from Home – A Success Story

A woman sits at a desk with a laptop and poses for a picture.

Teresa, a single mother of 3, was unemployed and had barriers to getting back to work, including a lack of childcare for her child, the loss of financial assistance, and health problems, all of which blocked her from returning to her job as a bartender.

She possessed some office skills which would allow her to work from home, but she didn’t own a computer to work on. Through the Dislocated Worker program, Teresa qualified for assistance. She was promptly enrolled in the program with guidance from Michigan Works! staff. We could now buy her the laptop she so desperately needed to get herself ready to win.

With job search assistance from U.P. Michigan Works!, she found a work-from-home job that provided her with full-time pay, plus overtime. Her new position also negated her barriers to employment. Teresa was elated at the prospect of being able to work from home.

Now, she is sustainably employed and working from home as a recruiter for a nursing company earning a fair wage.
