Michael came into the Chippewa County Michigan Works! office in October of 2025 with a clear goal in mind: he wanted to become a police officer. As a veteran and student at Lake Superior State University, he was highly motivated but unsure how to navigate the financial aid required to complete his Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) training.

We worked closely with Michael to identify and coordinate funding sources. We utilized the Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver along with his Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to ensure his education and training costs were covered. This comprehensive approach allowed Michael to move forward with confidence, knowing his financial needs were met.

In addition to tuition support, Michael needed assistance with essential training-related expenses, including a parking pass and required uniforms. Michigan Works! was able to provide funding for these items, removing additional barriers and allowing Michael to fully focus on his training, while still being able to support his four children. During our conversations about his long-term goals, Michael expressed a strong desire to give back to his tribe. Together, we strengthened his resume and completed his application, ensuring he was well-prepared for the next step in his journey.

As a result of his dedication and perseverance, Michael was offered a position with the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians, allowing him to serve and protect his Native lands. We are incredibly proud of Michael for his determination, resilience, and commitment to achieving his goals. His journey is a powerful example of how the right support and unwavering perseverance can lead to meaningful career success and community impact.
