MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Michigan Works! workforce services manager Tom Puskarich discusses what benefits employers and job-seekers gain in an apprenticeship.
Puskarich says an apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job training with a mentor currently working in the field and classroom learning. He says there are many benefits to both employers and job seekers.
Puskarich says job seekers can have a paycheck from day one in an apprenticeship. Plus, they can be paid during training, learn new skills, get a raise for higher skill levels, or even get a promotion.
For employers, apprenticeships provide highly skilled employees, reduced turnover costs, lower investment in recruitment, higher productivity, and a more diverse workforce.
Puskarich says the U.S. Department of Labor reports workers who go through an apprenticeship program earn an average of $300,000 more over the span of their career compared to colleagues who don't have an apprenticeship. Also, 91 percent of apprentices retain employment after the apprenticeship is over.
